RPG MIX: It's the 'X'

Written by Cut Man

There sure are a lot of sprite-based RPG's available for the Super Nintendo, thank goodness. But do we ever take time to overlap them in our minds? Maybe not. I'll attempt that right now though. If you're interested, keep right on reading.

- The Mix: Sprite-based heaven or a downfall of sorts? Are sprite-based RPG's on the rise, or on a death run? To figure this out, let's mix EarthBound and... say, Final Fantasy 3. Notice the pattern EarthBound shares with FF3: similar walk/run patterns, sprite size is very close, and so on. Now, if we trace the line of Final Fantasy games up to number seven, we see that the line of sprites is not at all lost. Yes, I believe that's safe at least. Will the next EarthBound game, EarthBound 64 be anything like Final Fantasy 8?

- The domino effect? So many companies (Enix, Square, Nintendo, SSI, etc.) use the sprite-based pattern for RPG's that it seems as though it will never fade. But, what of topview RPG's? Are they to be killed off? We remember such games as "AD&D - Dark Sun 2: Wake of the Ravager" and think that the topview style is long gone. But is this a domino effect? Will one pattern die and engulf the next? What will we see with EarthBound in the future (if anything at all)?
