Unnecessary nastiness on the forums

Written by Fobbio

I see in a lot of forum topics new visitors asking questions. Usually they are of "taboo" topics such as "When will hard trivia be updated?" or "Where has ...... gone?". I also see as a result a waterfall of nastiness. I call for this to stop under Reid's "Regoodification" banner. I am sick of reading "Why did you ask that NERD!" or "WHY ARE YOU ASKING ABOUT BADGES? NOW YOU'LL NEVER GET ONE HAHAHAH" and it obviously doesn't create a positive atmosphere for new people to the site. I call for every member when they see such posts to take a positive approach. PM the person and POLITELY explain what he/she did wrong or do so on the forum itself. This is not Iraq or a war zone we should be able to act a great deal more civil to each other.

Growth of the community is a positive thing in my view, I have seen forum topics say "Keep n00bs of the forum" and such, but I don't think that this should be the path we should take. We should teach new visitors to have patience and look around the forums that have a similar message before creating a new one. I believe the only way that this site will survive is with a constantly growing base. I don't know about everyone else but I don't think we are going to be here as much in our thirties and I'd like the site to live as long as possible.

In general everything has a positive and negative side to it new visitors as well. With proper grooming I believe that new visitors can easily become regulars with little or no hassle. Like you and me the first time we came to this site we were unknowing of the policies, hierarchy, rules and etc. Think of it this way, would you have liked being on the forums your first day and have someone scream at you for a tiny infraction? I know I wouldn't! As a general rule everyone at the site in at least partially comfortable with things the way they are or why would you hang around? It may be a hassle for the moment but that same citizen that you opted not to bash last week could very well be a new buddy of yours!
