The Man Behind the Dungeon

Written by STAREYe

Finding an EB character I closely resemble was not an easy task. I skimmed through guides in hopes of noticing a name or mention of a character that would make me think, I played a little EB, I even looked through EB0, thinking after I checked to make sure it was within the rules, it would make an original idea. And then, when I was turning off my computer to go to sleep that night, it hit me. No, not an idea, a book. I really must tidy up my bookshelf. Anyway, I'd love to say the title of the book or something inspired me and I knew exactly wanted to write, but unfortunately that didn't happen, causing the last few sentences to be completely irrelevant. :(

So after no success, I gave in to asking people what EB character they though I was like. The only remotely serious response I got (I made the silly mistake of asking people on IRC), was Dungeon Man. While the suggester (Midnight Kitsune), didn't really have an explanation as to why he thought I was like him, it was my only thought to go on, so I pondered over it. I found in many ways, I am like Dungeon Man (or Brick Road, as he must be called when referring to before he became a dungeon).

First of all, we have strange ambitions and hobbies. Everyone knows about Brick Road's goal to become Dungeon Man, a fusion of man and dungeon (hence the name, Dungeon Man), and dungeon making isn't exactly a common hobby. And those who know me well, may have heard of my odd wishes to do things like stepping on chickens (hey, it's fun in Zelda games), going to Antarctica to see the penguins, and how I love to make chains of paper clips (got about seven feet at the moment), and other odd things. Of course, Brick Road's dream got him forever trapped in some palm trees in the desert, and this makes me wonder where I'll end up. Writing that gave me pictures in my head of me in Antarctica with chicken feathers on my boots and paper clip chain frozen to both my hand and the ground, trapping me there. O_o

Another similarity, is we both horde useless junk. Dungeon Man has a broken yellow submarine (GO BEATLES REFERENCES! :D), an instant revitalizing Device courtesy of his buddy Dr Andonuts, and old bike, a taxi (why?), a phone, and countless items wrapped up in boxes. My room, is horribly trashed with junk. A little while ago I threw out a huge pile of chocolate bar wrappers that were gathering together in a drawer under my bed. I have the previously mentioned seven feet of paper clips hanging off my clock on my bookshelf, which has more decorations such as penguin figures, empty pop cans, a half-empty peanut butter jar, and other various things on it than books. My closet is full of parts of broken VRCs that me and my friend took apart, along with a broken microwave and a TV. I could say I'm a bit like Jeff, but I can't even put these things back to what they were, let alone laser guns and bazookas, although I did make myself a nice fan. Of course, the most disgusting of my junk, would have to be a bag of juice that, although I'm not completely certain on the age, is probably older than Starmen.net.

Something else we have in common, is that while we like to be alone, we're both generally friendly people/dungeons. Brick Road live in Winters, an isolated country with a population of only 506 (according to the player's guide that is, I see about twenty), but is nice enough to let Jeff stay the night, err, wherever he sleeps. He is also obviously close friends with Dr Andonuts. When he becomes Dungeon Man, he hides himself out in a desert that you need to solve the puzzle of the sphinx, then get through a pyramid to find, but still leaves out rest benches, hires a doctor and a nurse, puts up a sign inviting you to talk to his face, and even builds a bathroom! As for me, well, I spend my time cooped up alone in my room writing stupid essays on how I'm like a pixilated image from a eight year old video game ;D. But to be serious, I like to be alone a lot, but if you ask anyone who knows me, (I hope) they'll tell you I'm a pretty nice guy.

We also seem to have the same tastes and preferences in some things, for instance, pets. I would love to have a pet slimy little pile. Besides grossing my friends out, it could squeeze in and get stuff that falls between the refrigerator and the counter, assuming you can train these things. Although the bad part would be cleaning up after it, ugh... perhaps and insane duck the falls over and makes things spin around would be better. Another thing we both have the same tastes in would be music. I really like the music inside Dungeon Man, and I would assume he does as well. I can't see why anyone would trap themselves to listing to music the didn't like for however long dungeon-human fusions live. We also both like puzzles and stuff like that. Him being a dungeon maker, I would assume he likes puzzles, but then, his dungeons aren't at all mazes like you see in the dungeons of most RPGs, so maybe he doesn't like puzzles. :/

Upon writing this essay, I have found I am a lot more like our sign posting friend then I had ever thought before this essay contest started. In fact, had I not tried to write something, I probably never would have found out just how much like Dungeon Man I am. I hope you enjoyed reading this essay on how I'm like a character from Itoi's imagination as much as I did writing it. See ya! Watch for falling objects!
