I was playing Earthbound just a minute ago, and my brain spawned a thought:
"Why are there no bathrooms in Earthbound? I have to go now!"
This brings up a thought, why are there no bathrooms in Ness' house? Doesn't he
have to go every once in a while? And how come there are bathrooms in the
Monotoli Building, Library and Dungeon Man? The bathrooms that are there are in
the weirdest places. And why is the bathroom always occupied?
I can only answer a couple of these. The bathroom is occupied probably because
no one wants to design a public bathroom, if you've ever been in one you'll know
why. I try to avoid them whenever possible.
There are probably bathrooms, just were never put into people's houses probably
for the same reasons. Also, why do you go barging in to other people's house
looking for their bathrooms? Most people don't have bathrooms in their houses!
What do they do? Go out to the bushes and trees? This is crucial, in real life do
you go into other peoples house's? The most likely answer is no. And if you do,
shame on you.
Bathrooms are very important objects, why would they not be placed in a game?
The most likely answer is because people may consider them innapropriate for a
game that is targeted around 8-to-80-or-so year olds. Maybe the lack of them
represents something that Nintendo doesn't like about them, or just the fact that
they're often stinky.
In absolutely no known cultures are bathrooms considered sacred or anything.
Maybe no one likes bathrooms, maybe everyone wishes that John Crapper (The
inventor of the toilet) was never born, maybe we'll all become savages. But
probably not. I just wish that Nintendo had put more bathrooms into Earthbound.
That's all for today's article.
