11/17/03 Topic: Lumine Hall

How exactly does Lumine Hall work?

Economic Theory

The big rock in the Lost Underworld mentions that Lumine Hall is "where the shining lichen grow." I'm pretty sure that lichen only glow when they absorb light, kinda like glow-in-the-dark stickers, so it follows that there must have once been a light source shining on the lichen.

The thing is, these lichen are actually found all the way through the game. You just never see them because they're on the roof. Any time you go into a cave, you never see any torches or lanterns or anything, right? And Ness doesn't have night vision goggles, or they'd be in the inventory. Clearly, roof lichen are the answer - intelligent roof lichen that used to live on the surface, soaking up light for millions of years, before undertaking a mass exodus to the unlit caves and the Lost Underworld, where they'll be releasing their absorbed light energy for another million years or so.

As for the distinction between the shining lichen of Lumine Hall and the ordinary always-on lichen found elsewhere, it's like the difference between a high school science teacher and a university biology professor: different pay scale. (HA! And you thought I would say something about respective intelligence levels!) Yes, those shiny lichen get paid more, so they flash and sparkle and read people's minds and stuff to please their boss/overlord, Electro Spectre. So when you kill ES, you're also killing the lichen's economic structure. Shame on you!

Gigon and Terra

Lumeye is the powerful fortress of Giygas. It is found Gigon, the dark universe near ours. Gigon is the universe where starmen, mooks, UFOs, and Gigites come from. Gigites are Giygas' race.

Gigon is the universe closest to ours. It connects to our universe through a portal. This portal is Ness' mind. Magicent is really the bridge between Gigon and Terra (our universe). In order to prevent Giygas from leading a full scale siege on Terra, Ness had to close off Magicent. With Magicent closed off, Giygas would be the only Gigite in Terra.

In order to destroy the bridge (magicent), Ness had to drain the energy from his mind and imput it in his soul. (There is a difference between mind and soul.)

The eight sanctuaries were what channeled energy to magicent, so Ness had to drain them. When he drained them, they stopped powering magicent, and all there power entered Ness' soul, making him stronger.

When the last sanctuary was drained, Ness' soul was overloaded with energy, and it all blasted back into magicent, making it stronger then ever. Magicent's power was so sttrong that it warped Ness into it. When Ness killed the Nightmare, all of the energy went back into Ness' soul, and Magicent was destroyed.

On the other side of Magicent, in Gigon, the Gigites tried to bore another hole in the fabric of space time, using the Psi Cannon of Lumeye. Lumeye's psi beams were so incredibly psychic, that they bore through the fabric of space time, but didn't leave a hole. The psi went into the past, future, and present, beaming through lumine hall. These Psi waves could read minds, so they read Ness' when he came through. Even after Lumeye is destroyed in 200X, they still go through lumine hall due to there time traveling abilities.

A Noble Sacrifice

You really have to read the dialouge VERY carefully to understand. It mentions lichen: a typical variety of fungus. The cave obvious must have had light or you would be wandering in the dark which brings back up my previous idea of the Hawk Eye merging into Ness and allowing him to see in the dark. However, that would be metaphyisical and therefore science cannot acclaim it as being true and therefore: must be false. (Don't mind me, I'm bitter). However, the lichen obviously had light shining on it from somewhere and at sometime. At least often enough for it to shine as well. You can't make or destroy energy, so obviously it was getting the light from SOMEWHERE.

Using the light that occasionally shined upon the lichen, it was able to release a radiant glow. At first, the lichen just released a series of unintelligable symbols and letters and numbers. At the time, it was more like distorted aremaic. But as time went on, pyschics began being born. In this, they were able to sense that this particular lichen had something special about it. Eventually they were able to project thoughts, feelings and emotions into the fungus, but it did not understand.

Eventually, the lichen learned to read minds on its own and could shine on the wall what the people were thinking. Ness came, radiating about 10,000k normal background radiation from his psychic energies, and the lichen went haywire. It shined right into Ness' heart and mind and wrote out his words. Actually, because Ness is mute, he's been forced to bottle up his thoughts deep inside a very troubled existance (hence: Magicant.) and finally unleashed a long speech about every thought he's ever had. The game just edited it for length and simplicity.

After a long and empassioned speech about how much he hated beets, the team went on, and the lichen was alone once again. Now that it was entirly depleted of energy, the lichen perished, the only memory within the soundstone. It had done the only thing that destiny proclaimed it to do. That's it. Thank you.

Ranting

When you look at Lumine Hall, what do you see? Well, I see a humongous old LCD alarm clock for one thing, but that's beside the point. It's obviously coated in some sort of futuristic material left by the Saturn people! Yes! They decided that garbage cans hold no secrets and went to the past to create one big LCD so that Ness would have some crappy game made by Tiger to play when he gets bored of his horrible quest!

Ahah! I have it! Lumine Hall is a prehistoric TV! Yes! Those poor savages had nothing to do, so they went to his big cave that had lots of pretty rocks in it! Then, one of the cro-mags thought that the rocks looked cool when he lit a fire in the cave. The he got really surprised when he started writing things using a laser pen dropped by aliens from the future, amazing his fellow neanderthals. To this day, he sits in Lumine Hall using his solar powered laser pen to shine it at the rocks making secret messages that nobody understands except Ness and his dysfunctional friends.

Okay, okay, so I'm crazy. But you know, Earthbound is a nonsensical game I think? So all of our theories are wrong and can never be proved because lithium batteries only last so long, and all our saved games will be lost forever and ever!!!*sighs* I'm done ranting for the day, thank you starmen.net!

Kamikaze Hamsters...

Lumine hall is a cavern with glowing moss on the walls.....or so it seems. Actually, the moss is normal moss with lightbulbs under it! Powered by a complicated electrical system run by kamikaze hamsters, the lightbulbs go off in flickering patterns. Once a person enters, however, it starts showing their thoughts! In reality, a little lady - Madame Talephana - in a seperate room reads the people's minds. As Talah Rahma's father's cousin's sister's grandchild's uncle's brother's daughter's cousin (four times removed), she has a strong psychic ability to speak with kamikaze hamsters and read people's minds. So she receives the people's thoughts, then telepathically communicates with the kamikaze hamsters. The hamsters then execute a series of confusing dances (much dizziness ensues),manipulating the complicated electrical system to display the person's thoughts on the wall in a fancy-pants scrolling manner. Once the person leaves Lumine Hall, Madame Talephana gives the kamikaze hamsters a life-sized man dummy, which is shredded in minutes.

Theories Abound

(1. Notice the viewpoint in Earthbound. You can't see the southern wall, and Ness can only see the bottom of it. Obviously there is a guy sitting in an indentation in the rock, shining a flashlight on the wall very quickly. This person is definitely the tenda in the Tenda Village that you have coffee with. Who else knows what Ness is thinking about? Anyway, Ness can't talk to anyone in the group and tell them that the wall writing is fake, because he has asthma, just like Ninten did, and as you know, it must be VERY dusty in that hole so he never talks. He just uses PSI Oxygen to change carbon dioxide into oxygen. So, back to the wall. As you know, you'd have to move a flashlight very fast to get the light consistent. Remember that really strong tenda back in Tenda Village? If that tenda is so strong, strong enough to throw a boulder with ease, how much farther away can the other tendas be? I doubt that much farther behind.

(2. It reads the mind of the person with the biggest psychic aura. That is obviously Ness. Even if Poo was at level 99 and Ness was at level 12, Ness has much more potential that Poo. Therefore the wall would read Ness's thoughts.

(3. The wall is one of the new items made by the USA's Army. It projects people's thoughts onto a wall so they can tell what people are thinking. It runs on the electric waves in people's brains. They tested it and found the wall gave off large amounts of radiation, so they had to abandon it. They stuck it in the hole where no one would ever go. Ness and his teammates are not affected by the radiation because they are very strong. If they are not at least at level 40, you either cheated or are really good. If you are really good, Ness's mind would be strong enough to ward off the radiation anyway.

Tenda Wizard

Lumine Hall, a place where incredible things occur. When a person enters the dark, stoney corridor, the thoughts they posess are processed into a word format onto one of the smooth, rock surfaces. But how is this possible? How can an inanimate object hold the power to read one's thoughts? Well it all began quite a long time ago...in the Tenda age....

Many hundreds of years ago, the Tenda people roamed much of Eagleland's surface. They were a happy, prosperous people, but of course there was one guy who had to ruin the peace. His name was unknown, since he kept to himself, so people called him the Tenda Wizard. He was a bitter, senile old fellow, but wise and intelligent at the same time. He had travelled all over the world, learning magics from every corner of the earth. However, by the time he had settled down, he was very old. His home was in what is now Lumine Hall. It is said that one day, while trying to cook up a very difficult potion to read Tendas' minds, his cauldron exploded and the mixture hit all the walls of his corridor. Unfortunately, the Tenda Wizard was killed in the explosion, but his spirit stayed on, taking place in the walls. Now when travellers intrude onto his premises, he uses his final powers and reads the minds of others. Is it out of spite? Is it to embarass? We may never know...

what?

Well, according to the Tenda talkative rock Lumine Hall have something called "Shining Lichen" so it could be said that the Lichen is somehow receptive to the mind of (please insert dramatic music here) the chosen one. Which the game "subtles" implies that is none other that (again the dramatic music please) Ness. So, if you trust a talking rock that dwells in the "earth belly button" and only says obvious things then you could say that his theory is the absolute true.

However, some people thinks diferently. They say that Lumine hall really is... 。No!, what they say is just nonsense, isn't it?.

-Damon Badley

Sprinkles...

I will start by saying that Ness is an egotistical brat. He takes one look at the fancy lights of Lumine hall and assumes that it is reading HIS thoughts. Well that's just nuts to Paula Jeff and Poo isn't it? Really, the wall is reading off of the starmen's thoughts. The wall is covered in luminescent spirits called....oh let us call them spinkles. They feed off of thought energy and as a byproduct will arrange themselves to spell what they eat! Seriously, do you think they would perfer the intellect of a ten year old boy to an advanced alien? In case you're wondering, the starmen were playing the "What would I say if I were Ness" game!

-KZORADM

Hive Mind

The mosses in lumine hall are actually a massive throng of hyper-intelligent aliens with telepathic powers linked through a massive hive network, and the ability to make their skin glow in the dark.

It was perhaps these same aliens that made Ninten's grandfather, George, (earthbound zero) aware of humanity's psychic potential.

As for why they chose to communicate in this manner to Ness and his friends, I would speculate that their language is non-audible, and that they cannot broadcast thoughts to someone who's mind is outside their cumulative hive mind. So, the aliens devised a method by which letters could be formed by having certain members of their group illuminate their skin at certain times.

Yeah, thats about it

-Chibi Kami

Psychic Fireflies

A simple combination of PSI and bioluminescence. The main wall of Lumine Hall is covered in a grid of phosphorescent creatures, that due to their immobile nature, have developed a PSI network of communication, which can also pick up on human brainwaves. In the case of Ness, his PSI presence is so strong that it can almost override the neural network and cause the bioluminescence feature to work as a message board, displaying his thoughts. So think of it as a bunch of flat, psychic fireflies.

-Bosk

Whatever Works

Hmmmm... Lumine Hall works in conjunction with the sound stone. Since the stone is connected with Ness it reflects his thoughts upon entering due to the projection of Ness's PK it sets the stone unstable due to the high electric field around lumine hall. The stone ends up reflecting his thoughts on the wall through tiny waves of PK sent by Ness that were triggered from the electric field in Lumine Hall. That doesnt make to much sence....

-hunter morton

Weird

Well, the rock told us that the Lumine Hall is made of telepathic lichen. Lies, I say! Lumine Hall is actually Apple's new Instant Messager, which works by allowing users to communicate telepathicly- iEmpath! However, the hit release of iTunes overshadowed this incredible application, and the only known people to download it was me, Miss Cleo, the Pet Psychic, and Giygas. Giygas, whose Devil Machine ran on Windows, could not use the app and he tossed it down a hole. The disk carrying the program was a Gameboy Color disk, so it was durable and struck the inside of the Lumine Hall's cave without a scratch. Then a Fobby came, pushed it to the wall, fell over, and died. The Fobby's spirit grew to become the Mu god, but that's another story. A lone band of Pee-Wee Herman clones then came to the wall and spilled some Mr. T cereal on the disk. The cereal, which was radioactive, glowed and stuck to the wall. They miraculously had a DNA code identical to the source code of MacOS, and ran the disk carrying iEmpath without a flaw.

Now let me take a look at that brain of yours.

-Tenniru

O_o

Lumine Hall works in a rather simple fashion. Using state-of-the-art 301X technology they are able to create the most powerful computer ever. Of course it is called Earth, but that is a matter for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Anyway, using said 'Earth' they are able to process your every thought into binary which is converted into electronic impulses. These impulses illuminate the LED lights that make up Lumine Hall and reveal Ness' deep fantasies about... sorry, I probably shouldn't... "inappropriate content" perhaps?

Even Stranger

Just so you know im the rocks twin. Cant come up with a poem.

Basically Ness' stupid is so monumentally negativaly affective, that the lights that lumine hall is made of get dizzy and start flashing. This doesnt work on paula and poo cause they both have names that begin with p, for patrick star, as in spongebob squarepants, as in pinhead, so they are immune. Jeff, is so stupid he cant possibly go farther than rock bottom. Ness' PSI is what makes this gigantic field of stupid. Then, the lumine hall pushes them all out of the birth canal into the new and dangerous world.

Effects of Magnetism

Alright, people keep on saying that his thoughts get put up on the wall, but this is just false. See what actualy happens is the protaganists are confused because of the extreme magnetism from their last battle. The brainwaves are shot, so they all imagine lights, when its really just a shiny wall (Well it is called a shining spot, come on!). When you go back to the wall, nothing happens. Why would that happen? And all of them saw it, because all were effected. Tis true.

-Folley

Mind Reader

Lumine hall... the second to last sanctuary of Ness. When we got here, it said on the board "It's like my thoughts are on here.... or is it?" I guess it is sorta like a 'Electrical Mind Reader.' If you heart is pure and does not have as much darkness as those who do( ala Kingdom Hearts, baby!), you can have your thoughts transported to the miraclous board. It scans your mind and memories for your hopes, dreams, fears, etc. Like I said before, it's kinda psychic. Who created this micraclous? (Puts on glasses) The world may never know.

-The Runaway Five Teen

Spekkio Theory

Lumine hall, huh?

It's so incredibly simple to explain, so I'm going to complicate it a bit.

Long ago, there was a wise man who sought the ability to read minds. After many experiments he still was unable to read minds. Now elsewhere, Spekkio, the master of war, observed this man's plight and decided to help him. (He was really drunk OK?) And so, using his cool magicky-type powers, he gave him a chunk of mold. The wise man simply complained to Spekkio that it was stupid. And so, Spekkio smote him. (Now you know what caused saturn valley, it's a big crater) Anywho, Spekkio decided that he'll just stick the mind reading mold on any random cave, and thus, lumine hall was made.

Fear the wrath of Spekkio!!!!

-Moonside Saturn

Pie

Well, there are several possible explanations.

1. Ness's thoughts emit an ultrasonic frequency due to his PSI. The rocks in the cavern pick up the frequency and amplify it, which causes the wall to vibrate and then change color due to their strange properties. Kinda like a radio.

2. The little men in Ness's head use their tiny telephones to give the signal to the little men in Lumine Hall, telling them what Ness is thinking.

3. There is no Lumine Hall. It is just a group hallucination caused by the group's weariness.

4. A wizard did it.

That's all. Go eat pie, or whatever it is you people do. :P

-Lightning Dragon, formerly known as Blazing Liger

Giygas' Remains

When Ness and co. defeated the evil Giygas in the past only the intrinsically evil aspects of him were destroyed. Over time the more benevelent semi-conciousness of the alien being were gradually incorporated into the planet itself thus creating the Lumine Hall.
