Mother 3 News Section:

Welcome to the Mother 3 News Section. This is a collection of news that has happened in the past few years concerning Mother 3. To navigate through the news section, use the links below.

Something's on the horizon.....

Space World is about to take off, and IGN64.com has already begun reviewing the games which can be found there. Guess what the front runner in the popularity race is? You guessed it, our much-anticipated Mother 3!

Here's the news straight from the IGN News page:

"...Mother 3 "The Fall of the Pig King " (called Earthbound 64 in the US) is scheduled to show at Nintendo's Space World in Japan later on this week. In the meantime, though, Famitsu Weekly has released a few interesting tid-bits on the battle system for the game and a handful of new screenshots (one of which we've posted). So, here's the latest:

The fighting system appears to take place in first-person style showing only the enemies (a la Quake). An on-screen menu display enables players access to all of the following: Check, Items, Stand, Fight, Strength and Magic. Gamers will be able to use the energy of their surroundings to cast more powerful magic. However, if magic is used too often, the head of the spell caster will overheat, incapacitating him for a short time.

In traditional RPG fashion, gamers can pull off a variety of different attack patterns, such as running in and firing off multiple hits on opponents if timing is dead-on.

Famitsu also revealed four of the characters that to be introduced: The Father, the Twins Luca, Krause and the dog Boney.

IGN64 will have more on Mother 3 (Earthbound 64) later this week. Stay tuned... "

Please note that this is from a magazine, not direct from Space World, which will start later this week. This will be a VERY busy week on EB.Net, so visit regularly to check for Mother 3 updates. If you see some breaking news on Mother 3, let us know!

Aroma Pak

The Aroma Pak (or "smelly pak") is just an April fools joke. It will not be used with Earthbound64. It is not real and will not be available anywhere.

Japanese Date Turmoil

NCL's recent date change of the DD from June to "sometime this year" has also changed the Earthbound date. While previously it had been for Fall 98, it has now been thrust into "unknown" by NCL. This hints that the DD may be not coming till winter in Japan. :-(

EarthBound in Ask Dan

In AskDan, some one asked about the similar names of EarthBound and EarthBound64 developers.

Q: Who exactly are Shigesato Itoi and Benimaru Itoh? Are they brothers? Cousins? Close friends? Why I ask this is because Shigesato Itoi made Earthbound (I think he also made Mother, didn't he?) and now you just all of a sudden introduce Benimaru Itoh as the man working on Earthbound 64 (though he has made Nintendo Power's comics before). What I'm trying to say is, did one of them decide to change the last letter of their last name and that their last name's use to be the same, or is it just a coincidence that the man who made Earthbound's last name is Itoi and the man working on Earthbound 64's last name is Itoh? --Nester H. Larke

A: Shigesato Itoi and Benimaru Itoh are different people. Mr. Itoi was the scenario writer for Earthbound, and is a famous copywriter in Japan. Mr. Itoh is a comic book artist. He is working on Earthbound 64 as art director and character designer. Mr. Itoi is also working on Earthbound 64 as the scenario writer.

A Japanese Date Finally?

A reliable source has told me that the development team is aiming to release it Spring '99 in Japan.

Officially on Cartridge

After weeks of rumors, EB64 has been confirmed switched to cartridge. The game will be cut in half, size wise. A 32 MB cart will house the game. A DD add-on sequel has been announced, too. It will take advantage of EB64. Look for more info on this soon.

Straight from the Horse's Mouth

I have the quote right here. Miyamoto stated the following in yesterday's interview with Game Walker Magazine:

"The development team is working on Mother 3 releasing somewhere around the end of this year or next spring. It depends on the 64DD's launch date. But from a software development standpoint, we're on schedule. As for Mother 3, it will use a system like we do in Zelda 64. Games like Cabbage, Mario Artist, Sim City 64 will be able to utilize the 64DD's features. So it can't be changed to a standard cartridge game. The strong point of a cart is that it can exchange data in real time. A cart's big advantage is running the basic engine. But if you're thinking about exchanging more data and producing lots of data, the DD system is more fitting for the task than a cart. For a game like Mother 3, which uses more data and needs to run in real time, using a cart and a DD is a perfect mix. Currently, we have a 256 megabit cart now. It can store much more data than in the past. So I think DD will be used for additional data so you can play the game once again after you complete it, just like after Ura Zelda appeared in the past Zelda or as a method for backing up data."

The features that made this game 64DD "unique" will instead be included on a later add-on disk, to be released as close to the cart version as possible, this being the Zelda "system" that Miyamoto was referring to. It will ship on the same 256 M-bit cart size that Zelda uses, making the inclusion of more S-RAM for saving massive data amounts unlikely. US release (of EB64, not necessarily EBDD) is almost definite now that the game is a cart.

7th Most Wanted Game in Japan

The Top 10 most anticipated games from Famitsu Magazine.

1. Final Fantasy VIII(PSX)
2. Dragon Quest VII(PSX)
3. Legend of Zelda:Ocarina of Time
4. Metal Gear Solid(PSX)
5. Ogre Battle 3
6. Pocket MonsterGold/Silver (GB)
7. Mother 3
8. D2 (DC)
9. Tokimeki Memorial2 (PSX)
10. True Love Story 2 (PSX)

Pretty good, considering that the ratio of PSX to N64 in Japan is 5:1.

Tentative Title?

In IGN64's N-Query, Peer tells us....

"Earthbound 64 is only a development title and will definitely change before the game comes out."EB64 has already gone through a bunch of names. It was previously sub-titled 'The Forest of Chimera', but that was dropped because of copy write law in Japan. It still could be used for the US/PAL releases.

Now 9th in Japan

Famitsu says that EB64 is now the 9th most wanted game in Japan. Ehrgeiz is new to the charts, and pushed it down.

Less Battles than the Average RPG

According to Shane Sacobie of Videogame Heaven, the frequency of battles in EB64 will be kept lower than most RPG's, to give the player more time to walk around and keep you from worrying about getting into a fight every step you take. This will be a good change of pace from the N64's first somewhat failed RPG attempt, Quest64, which had way too many battles.

Famitsu's Most Wanted List

1. Final Fantasy VIII(PSX)
2. Dragon Quest VII(PSX)
3. Saga Frontier 2(PSX)
4. BioHazard ~ Code:Veronica (DC)

9. Pocket MonstersGold/Silver (GB)
12. Sega Rally 2 (DC)
13. Powerful Pro Baseball6
17. Bokujou Monogatari 2
22. Beatmania (GB)

This is Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu's most wanted list. EB64 is now the 5th most wanted, and most wanted Nintendo game. It's the first time in a while that it's been this high. Ogre Battle 3 isn't as high as it usually is, because Quest hasn't released any new information lately.

The Last Hurrah

Not so much news, but a realization on my part. With the recent talks of the next generation of systems, EarthBound 64 will be HAL's last N64 game. They will be working full time on the next Nintendo system after that (don't worry, Rare and other developers will still support the N64). Hopefully they will be putting their time and effort into going out with a bang.

Famitsu's Top Ten Most Wanted

1. Dragon Quest VII(PSX)
2. Gran Turismo 2(PSX)
3. Shen Mue Chapter1: Yokosuka (DC)

Delayed Again

IGN Reports that Famitsu reports that (heh) Mother 3 looks more like it will not be released until the spring of 2000 (heheh). They also still seem to be unsure which format the Japanese game will be (cartridge, DD, or both).
