No Meeting, Site Downtime |

Hey folks, no meeting this weekend. Also, I'm switching domain registrars, so Starmen.Net might be down for a little while this weekend. Maybe not. Hard telling. Either way, there will be a meeting next week. Whether it will be sweet or not has yet to be seen.

Testing for Donors |

This is just a little status report on the CS:S server. The new website for the server has been created. (Praise me! :D The MSIE hack for those alphaPNGs are pretty ugly. :/) Now we're ready to test out the reserved status. If you are a previous donator, check out the "First Hit is Free" topic and put your SteamID there. Don't know what your SteamID is? Check the how to get your SteamID topic!
So what exactly do reserved members get? Well that's what this is to decide! They already have the following powers: reserved slot to get in anytime, the ability to turn friendly fire on or off, the ability to put out bots to fill the server to six players, the ability to talk to everyone in as an admin, and the ability to kick any cheaters, TKers, and other lamers. Like our good Uncle Ben has said, "With great power comes great responsibility," so don't abuse your reserved powers or I shall remove them with no refund.

Original EarthBound Commercial |

If you're in or around your 20's, you may remember seeing as a kid the game review stations Nintendo would have set up at places like Wal-Mart or Sears. You'd press a button and it would show you a preview of some of the new games that came out or were coming out. They had a video for EarthBound too, and for the longest time I've been wanting to find it again. Well now that Metacrawler.com has a new video search, I gave it a go and magically the video popped up! It's stuffed deep within the server of archive.org. So we aren't leeching off their bandwidth, I re-uploaded it to our server for fun viewing. Enjoy!
View it here (5.7 MB .asf)

A Look at Things to Come |

As per reidman's request, here are all the new site design previews released at the last meeting.

Pretty amazing eh? The Dev-Team, Resubmitters, and an army of trained Patricks are all working behind the scenes to get this new site up as quickly as possible. So please excuse the lack of updates. Go play some CS:S while you wait, or talk about it in this forum topic.

Wanna play some CS:S? |

The CS:S donation server is up in testing right now. We have a full 16 player server, and everything's going fine. If you wanna join us, the IP address is "starmen.net". Pretty easy to remember.
If you have previously donated, check the "The First Hit is Free" in the new CS:S forum. I'll get you a free month of reserved goodness! Questions, comments, concerns? Post them there!

It's Log, it's - wait I did that last week |

New meeting log is up, also I think Coors Lite won the Super Bowl. Or New England. Whatever, they're both good teams. New Mailbag will be along sometime this week.

Meeting in progress |

The main thing that people are going to be interested in:
I will be releasing the preview of the new site design, and yes, it will be the final preview, full size. I know quite a few people have seen it already (it actually was pretty easy to find for a while), so I'd like to get it out of the bag and hopefully get people interested in the site's new look.
Hope to see you guys there. And, yes, I know I scheduled the meeting during the Superbowl. Its not like A) we don't all know who's going to win B) you won't be able to download the sex-sells-products-to-lonely-men commercials all over the internet anyway ;)

READ THIS. |

In what I can honestly say is, without concession, the greatest video game article I have ever read, Tim Rogers of large prime numbers and insert credit delves WAY beyond the trite-hype reviews which have been a contributing factor to the neglect EarthBound has received outside of Japan. Heck, he even addresses this in his article when he makes fun of the reviewers who could talk about nothing more than the game's "wacky wackiness" and "trippy backgrounds".
As Tim reveals, there is much more to Mother 2 than I suspect most of us could ever have realized. I have a feeling even Tomato, the one person on this site who probably understands the genius of Shigesato Itoi more than anyone, will learn a lot from this article.
"I can guarantee you that no fourteen-year-old gamer in 1994 was thinking about game-design-philosophy when he first entered that house. He was probably angry as hell. He'd just spent a few hours of his life -- hours he can never get back -- fighting monsters to earn money to buy a house that's missing a ****** wall.
Then you open the dresser."
There are only three things "wrong" with the article, and none of them are actually bad. Here's why.- First, as you can see, it's got a little language, and a little "adult" subject matter, but really only for that first paragraph of the article. I only need to say this because I know there are some younger kids that come to the site. The language is definitely not used needlessly, and it really actually helps the article out. Precisely like Itoi, the article is very genuine and doesn't hold back when it needs to be frank.
- Second, there are some minor inaccuracies. But anyone who is caught complaining about these will be strung up by their toenails and shot.
"Should the player possess extra ingenuity and a knack for exploring, he'll be rewarded only with things such as hearing his bicycle breaks squeal beneath the waters of a rainforest."
Such sentences can only be written by a person who has played, enjoyed, and thoroughly understood every aspect of our beloved series. - Third, the article is very long. This is only bad if you suffer any combination of the following: 1) laziness 2) inability to read english 3) inability to appreciate good literature
This guy captured what Mother 2 is all about. Reading this article makes me want to play EarthBound again, and hopefully I will, for the good of this website. I think you guys should too.
Enjoy, and be inspired.

It's Log, it's Log, it's big it's heavy it's wood |

If you're too lazy, scared, or bewildered to find it in the forums, here's the log of last Sunday's meeting, complete with joins, mode-setting, and wacky op commentary. Notice that I've been vindicated as the standard for hilarity against which all other jokes and commentary must be judged. Laugh.
